Coughing & Sneezing

Causes of Coughing & Sneezing in Cats and Dogs

When your family pet is experiencing coughing & sneezing that occurs more often, or for prolonged periods of time, it may be time to consult your local Johnston veterinarian. At Rush Animal Care Clinic P.C., when we encounter sneezing and coughing dogs and cats, they are often suffering from an upper respiratory infection. Just like humans, family pets are at risk of contracting viral, fungal, or bacterial infections. Similar to the common cold, these infections can lead to more serious issues if not dealt with properly.

How to treat coughing & sneezing

When your cat or dog is suffering from a minor upper respiratory infection, the coughing & sneezing they experience will go away with time, usually over a period of about 2 weeks. However, if the symptoms worsen or you notice that your pet is lethargic, feverish, or has stopped eating, then it is imperative that you contact your Johnston veterinarian.

Coughing and sneezing are just two symptoms of a possible respiratory infection. Other indications include runny nose and eyes, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. When the symptoms are minor, such as a runny nose and occasional sneezing, you can help your pet by creating a comfortable environment in which they can rest. Creating a calm, safe place, and providing plenty of water and care will help your pet recover.

If coughing & sneezing persist, along with more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, your vet can provide the care and antibiotics that your cat or dog requires in order to get well. When dealt with promptly, respiratory infections can clear up within a matter of a few weeks. As symptoms continue untended, minor respiratory infections can develop into more severe issues such as pneumonia.
